GP 2010 SP1 to GP 2016 R2 upgrade

We have currently GP 2010 sp1 installed on Windows server 2008 R2 64-bit and database SQL Server 2008 SP2 without any customization but have SmartConnect maps to import couple of Excel & CSV files into GP. We would like to upgrade to GP 2016 R2 on to Windows 2012 R2 and SQL server 2014 R2 with GP WorkFlows, WebClient and PowerBI features. what is the best upgrade path? anyone had similar upgrade requirements?

I have planned to follow below upgrade path,

1) upgrade existing GP 2010 sp1 to GP 2010 SP4 or YE 2014 then back up all GP databases
2) Install GP 2015 R2 on brand new server with windows server 2012 R2 & SQL server 2015 then run GP utilities and restore GP 2010 company databases

3) Upgrade GP 2015 R2 to GP 2016 R2

let me know if anything change in above process or if there is any other better way to do it.

Hi Madan

I see nothing wrong with your plan.

The path I have in my notes is GP 2010 SP4 (11.00.2248) >> GP2015 R2 (14.00.725) >> GP 2016 R2

So that is what I would do.

I presume you mean that you are using SQL 2014 as there is no SQL 2015. There is a SQL 2016.

If you are using SQL 2014 then you can update your GP 2010 using SQL 2014 with SQL 2008 compatibility.

Then update the SQL versions as you update your GP versions.

As for Smartconnect I can't give you advice as we use Scribe as our import tool. Check with Eone Software regarding upgrading Smartconnect. You may need to upgrade that as you go along as well.

If you have any 3rd party products don't forget them as well.

And don't forget to update your modified forms and reports dictionaries as you go to GP 2010 SP4 and then GP 2015 R2 and finally GP 2016 R2

Hi Jeffrey,

thanks for your valuable feedback and time. You are correct about the SQL server version under step 2 in my notes, i mean SQL server 2014 not 2015 , sorry for the typo.

Hi Madan,

Basically your steps seems correct, just a slight correction from your initial steps..

1) upgrade existing GP 2010 sp1 to GP 2010 SP4 or YE 2014 then back up all GP databases
2) Install GP 2015 R2 on brand new server with windows server 2012 R2 & SQL server 2015 then run GP utilities and restore GP 2010 company databases

You should restore your GP2010 Databases before you install GP 2015... otherwise you'll have to run the setup twice.. why would install GP2015 first on an empty system ? go thru all the hassle of creating a base installation of DYNAMICS & GP companies.. and then do it again once you restored your 2010 backups.. ?

The remaining upgrade path looks good.

PS: since this is a brand new SQL server, donc't forget to grab all the user identities and restore them on the new server.. there is a KB that provide all the steps. (KB878449, make sure to grab the latest revision).
