What do I need to do if I no longer want to use Sandbox and just want to use Production for everything including all customizations?

Hi everyone,

We are a small company with 6 users.  Right now, I do all customizations in Sandbox in various solutions and then import them into Production.  We used Salesforce for a decade before D365 and we never used Sandbox as there was no need; we would do all changes right in Production.

The problem I'm having is that I'm spending more time trying to get Production to match Sandbox than I am doing actual customizations.  I will change a solution in Sandbox, or make a new one, and everything is great in Sandbox.  I then export it as managed, and import it into Production, and half the time it's nothing but cryptic error messages like the one below, with ZERO helpful info, like I'm supposed to know what that error number means:

As such, I no longer want to use Sandbox at all and just want to use Production and I don't care if that's against best practices or not, as we're at the point that we have been seriously considering moving back to Salesforce as I'm finding this so time consuming, and quite frankly beyond frustrating at these error messages.  It's crazy that Microsoft expects customers to somehow know what "Error code: 80048539" means.

Would I just moving forward now, leave everything as is, and make all new solutions directly in Production?  Right now, 95% of all customizations are in one main solution which is managed on Production, and then there's 15-20 other smaller ones for other changes also as managed.  Do I need to make that solution unmanaged to work with it in Production, or do you basically just leave everything as is and now moving forward just create your new solutions directly in Production and never touch any of the existing managed ones?  Just want to ensure I'm doing this the proper way, and wasn't sure if I'm supposed to instead export my main solution now as unmanaged to make it unmanaged in Production, or if I just leave it as is.

Thank you!

    Hello,

I understand your frustration of dealing with the Managed solutions and its import and export error.

Though, I can not recommend you to make any changes on Production. The best approach would be make changes on the Sandbox and then export the solution.

If you are making the customization for Inhouse CRM, you can keep the solution unmanaged, this will make it some easy for you to export or Import solution.

Also, Please follow the below steps to make it easy way for managing your solutions:

    1. If your Sandbox and Production are similar, Copy the entire Production System to your sandbox. This step will make them equal.

    Login: https://admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com/environments

Select the Production Environment and click Copy.

Select the sandbox environment. to be overwritten. (Select everything)

Note: this works only from Production to sandbox, and from sandbox to sandbox.

    2. Start with a new unmanaged solution. This will assist you and makes your process faster.

    3. Do not make too many solutions, rather make the patches and merge into main solution.

If you follow this, you wont stuck alot.

Do let me know if you are stuck.

    Hey!

I'm not sure you can add the same solution as managed & Unmanaged on an environment.  So exporting as Unmanaged and importing into production, shouldn't be possible.

In such cases, you can create a new solution and add the previous (managed) solution as a dependency and build your own UnManaged from there.

    Hi psychobunny83,

The sandbox environment is more conducive to your testing, making your system more stable, and at the same time better protecting customer data.I found an article about error codes that you can try to fix and then continue using the sandbox.

Here’s the link about what "Error code: 80048539" means.

If you're really going to give up on sandboxing you can look at the differences between managed and unmanaged solutions in production environments.

"The best approach would be make changes on the Sandbox and then export the solution." yes I agree, except it often fails or give dependency issues where I have to spend a much of time figuring out what the problem is.

When you say overwrite Sandbox with Production though I'm confused by that.  Production is 100% managed solutions, and Sandbox is 100% unmanaged.  If I tell it to overwrite Sandbox with Production, won't that just result in all of my solutions now being managed and not possible to edit them?  Or do you mean that's the goal that I'm starting fresh where all my current solutions won't ever be touched again, and then moving forward create a new, single, unmanaged solution where I use patches to update it?
