Create Manufacturing Orders for Subassemblies in Multi-level BOM Structure automatically

We currently use Microsoft GP 2015. I have a product that has a top level part number called (RS-0001). In it's MFG BOM it has 5 subassemblies (RS-0002, RS-0003, RS-0004, RS-0005, and RS-0006). Each of these subassemblies has the raw material associated to it. When we place a Sales order for RS-0001, it only creates a manufacturing order (MO) for the RS-0001. How do I tell GP to automatically create MO's for all subassemblies? We currently are a make to order manufacturing facility. GP is setup as make-to-order and we do not use MRP. None of our parts are setup with manufacturing lead times or setup times.

Typically the mechanism to create sub-assembly work orders in GP would be MRP. MRP would suggest work orders for sub-assemblies, and they would need to be transferred to Work Orders by a planner.  Since you don't use MRP you have two alternatives. First, you can create the sub-assemblies as Phantom Bills of Material (this is one of the BOM Categories in GP).  Phantom BOMs allow for an indented BOM without the requirement to create separate work orders for the sub-assemblies.  If this doesn't work for you, Willoware has a product that would automate the process of creating work orders for all required sub-assemblies. willoware.com/.../mogen_1

    Harry,

If we create Phatom Bills of Materials for all subassemblies, could I eventually sell a subassembly component as a finished good item? Could I create a sales order for an RS-0002-> create the manufacturing order and ship for a phantom Bill of materials part?

You can sell phantom BOM items. You can also use the Quick MO function to make the items available in inventory, and consume the raw materials.  You will be prompted the items are phantoms, but can override the warning.  This is necessary, as by definition, phantom items are normally only made when a "parent" MO requires them.

Just ran across this thread from a couple years ago and thought I'd add a thought.  There's a third party ISV solution from Willoware that will generate MOs for subassemblies in the GP Manufacturing module.  If this is really time consuming for your business, it might be worth a look.
