CRM for Outlook Client to work on a non domain account

Hello,

 I have a user that has a laptop that is not part of our domain (using his local user profile).  He has to use CRM for Outlook and track his e-mails using CRM on his laptop.  His e-mail setup using a POP3 Account that downloads his e-mail from our Exchange Server.  He has a domain user account (Active Directory User Account) and a CRM User Account setup.  He connects to a VPN for him to be able to use the web-based CRM using the ip address of the CRM Server.  He uses his domain user account to access CRM. 

The goal is to have his laptop using his local user account connect to the CRM using CRM for Outlook Client.  Is this possible or does his laptop need to be joined to the domain creating a domain user profile?  Thanks.

    Hi Mike,

    CRM's default config uses 'on prem authentication' and assumes all users are domain members with their workstations joined to the domain - thus no prompting uid/pwd inside your network.

    You can configure 'IFD' authentication.  THis allows you to specify a range of ips which are considered 'inside' your network.  WHen users connect from an ip address 'NOT in this list of ips/networks', they are prompted  for a uid/pwd.  The same is true for the outlook crm client.  This allows a user that has a machine not jointed to the domain OR is outside yoru network to connect to crm.

    If all of your workstations are not joined to a domian, you could configure IFD and onWhenly specify the ip of domainthe crm server and sql server as being in your internet network.  This would cause all users to be prompted for authentication and will not use onprem authentication.

    Hi Alex,

     Just want to make this clear.  If I install IFD authentication on the CRM Server.  Only workstations not joined to the domain will be prompted for authentication and domain workstations will not be prompted for authentication.  Will this also work with CRM for Outlook Client on a workgroup if the CRM Server is on a domain?

    Hi Mike,

    The determining factor on weather the outlook crm clients are prompted for uid/pwd or not prompted is the network ip addresses they are accessing from.

    When you configure IFD with the ifdconfig tool you specify the 'internal' network.  Clients on the 'internal' network are assumed to be joined to your domain and will use integrated authentication.

    If only some of your workstations inside your network are joined to your domain you will have to configure ifd and have all workstations be prompted for uid/pwd.

    Hi Alex,

    I think the IFD Tool is what I need.  The CRM Server is setup as OnPremise which is perfectly fine until we start having remote users.  These remote users are using their home computers connect via VPN to our network and access the CRM Server via IE Browser using the IP Address of the CRM Server and gets prompted for authentication.

    Everything is fine until management wants them to use CRM for Outlook to track their e-mails.  This is where I am having a problem because I am trying to setup CRM for outlook on their home computer.  I get stuck when I run CRM Configuration Wizard and when I put the IP Address and click next I get the following error:

    "The specified Microsoft CRM server is not available.  Make sure that the URL is correct. To test the URL, try opening it in Internet Explorer."

    Does this sound like IFD Tool would do the trick.  Sorry if I'm almost repeating myself.  I'm just stuck with this.  Thank you for your help.

    Yep - you need the IFD tool.  Also install an SSL certificate so everything is secure over the Internet.
