Solutions in Dynamics 365 CRM

Hi,

We are using Dynamics 365 CRM online version. Currently in the production , there is a managed solution which comprises two entities.

Following are my queries :

1) Does having a managed solution affects/creates any problem during upgrade/migrate/restore ?

2) How to convert a managed solution to an un-managed solution ?

3) Can we perform a restore activity between two instances when there are managed solutions in the system ? (want to restore production in dev instance)

4) Is it possible to perform restore activity between two different admin account instances  (In the above step 3, both  the instances are from same admin centre of Office 365) ?

    Hi,

If you delete the managed solution it will delete all data along with all managed components associated with unmanaged solutions.

For your third point I don't think MS will allow DB restore in trial version. You can do manual process like export import solution and data.

    Hope  this helps.

RE: Solutions in Dynamics 365 CRM

Gotam, thanks a lot for the inputs. I have some queries as listed below (in-line response)

    1) Thanks. I will go through the provided links

    2) I can create an un-managed solution with the components of manged solution , as you suggested. But later , if I delete the existing managed solution , does the components & related data will be still present in the system ? ( as we have an un-managed solution with the components)

    3) Our requirement is to restore the Production database in Dev instance (especially for the data purpose). So as part of that (prior to restoring Prod DB in Dev) , first I am planning to try it out in a trail environment by restoring PROD db (later I will do same in Dev). But my doubt is , will it be possible to restore the PROD DB in a trail version instance? (because , trail version will be created by my email address. Whereas the Prod instance is a licensed one (includes UAT & Dev) which is bought by customer.I am assuming, all the instances those comes under same license (PROD,UAT & DEV) will have access for DB restore, but not with different/other license instances (for example trail version) )

    4) Thanks. I will go through the provided links

Note : All the instances are online versions (dynamics 365 CRM)

    Hi,

    Please find answers -

    1) Does having a managed solution affects/creates any problem during upgrade/migrate/restore ?

Upgrade/Migrate  - Its depends on what kind of customization you did in your managed solution. Make sure you do all supported customization in the managed solution.Upgrade solution does not impact on managed solution until and unless MS deprecated something.

Restore/Overwrite - You should know certain things when you are aware that the solution will overwrite over managed solution.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customer-engagement/developer/understand-managed-solutions-merged

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customer-engagement/developer/maintain-managed-solutions

    2) How to convert a managed solution to an un-managed solution ?

There is no supported way to convert managed solution to unmanaged solution. But you can create one unmanged solution and include components there  to make any changes.

    3) Can we perform a restore activity between two instances when there are managed solutions in the system ? (want to restore production in dev instance)

You should make changes only DEV --> PROD , not vice-versa . As you need to maintain  unmanaged solution in DEV only. Once you exported unmanaged solution to managed solution to prod , that means you can not move managed solution where unmanaged instance exists(DEV).

    4) Is it possible to perform restore activity between two different admin account instances  (In the above step 3, both  the instances are from same admin centre of Office 365) ?

I am not sure about  your requirement but FYI ,  you can import /maintain as many instances , but make sure you should maintain unmanaged solution in the DEV itself.

Here is some useful discussion between managed and unmanaged solution , you can take a look -

RE: Solutions in Dynamics 365 CRM

Hello Radu , thank you so much for the response...

Regarding 3rd & 4th question , it's about database restore . I have a requirement to restore the Production database in Dev instance. As part of that ,

    1) Can I perform DB restore , if there are any managed solutions in the system ?

    2) Before trying out the above step (Prod restore in Dev instance) , I would like to create a trail version and restore prod db in the trail version...Can I do this ? If so how ?

Note : All the instances are Dynamics 365 CRM Online versions

    Hello

    1. Normally there shouldn't be any issues

    2. This isn't possible

    3 & 4 - I am afraid I don't quite understand the questions.
