Can I assign a report based on security role? Is this possible Out of the Box? If not, what are possible approaches that I can take?

Not to a role but if you want limit access you can set the reports to be ‘Individual’, and assign the report to a specific User or Team

You cannot use Security Roles to Assign a Report. Reports can only be assigned to User or Team.

Hi J.

They are only individual or organization report.

While Individual report, can only owned by A TEAM or A USER.

Then it wont be available to other users/teams by default, unless that owner share it out or assign it to any other and it might be possible he will lose his access since the ownership is changed.

Organization report means that the user with that allow to see reports can see the reports, regardless the owner.

So, you can only assign report by users/teams/organization, not by security role.

Anyway, the data shown in the report will be displayed based on the respective user security role, so not appear in the report if the user doesn't have privilege.

You can try another way by using Role Based View so that you can try to 'hide' the reports using Report View.
