Reference field on Journal Entry from Payroll

I have a client who posts payroll to the general ledger so they can edit the reference field of the payroll journal entry before posting it. They change it from the default Payroll reference to the week ending date. I know from other modules the transaction description populates that field, is there a way to get payroll to do this also?
