Where do I start. Dynamic NAV

I have been heavily involved in the implementation of NAV 2015 in my own company and found it fasinating and frustrating.

I now am extremely keen to build a better understanding of the product and how to tailor it to suit users.

I don't see me as a "Coder" but I think  with a good grounding I could be a very valuable Project Manager for others going down the NAV route.

I have a limited understanding of the Development environment and the Configuration options. Now I need to establish how or where I can develop my skills further.

My ideal would to be able to work in a Partner Office to get training and practical skills.

Any suggestions will be very welcome

Thanks

Welcome to the Dynamics NAV projects world!

Your ideal "... to work in a Partner Office to get training and practical skills" makes perfect sense. I am not aware where you are located, but in general this shouldn't be too difficult as there always seems to be a shortage of NAV professionals. In the end it's up to you to make the jump.

In my current job, working at an end user, I also see quite some colleagues growing their NAV knowledge and skills. But we have our own team doing all development projects themselves.

    Good luck.

This is great opportunity for you to learn NAV as product as it is enriched with lot of features for business process involved in industries.

As suggestion you can start learning the business process invovled in your company and how it is mapped with NAV processes. How the GAP is identified and how partner is customizing the processes based on requirement from your end user. Involve more with users and business consultants to understand the product. This will help you to understand the product very well. Try to attend the every training session imparted by Partner and check the impacts every transactions happening in product.

Press F1 for in the product for comprehensive help

    All the best

I am based in Scotland, UK. I am in the lucky position where I can "jump" when I find the opportunity.

I just need to find the starting point.

Cheers for that. I have a serious taste for NAV and my frustration is not just being able to learn properly. I can see what is possible and now just want to learn how to tap in more fully and professionally. I miss having access to a Dev licence.

I am lucky that I am not under pressure to act. but that is also my downfall. No pressure leads to inactivity

    Thanks again

You can make use of Microsoft Developer Network library to start with.

    Hi,

Best starting point is start reading on Dynamics NAV manuals and participate in online forums. Reading Dynamics NAV manual will give you the basic knowledge on the product and by participating in the forum activities you will gain knowledge on real world implementation issues which is a very valuable thing to have while you on the job.

Other option is to go for a partner training, I think you will find plenty of training partners in the UK and Scotland area for Dynamics NAV. These trainings will give you a good kick start to your new world. (I still suggest you better read the NAV training manuals before join any training program).

If your company has the access to Partnersource or CustomerSource you might already have the access to Training guides of NAV.

Let us know if you need additional help.
