Hi All ,

AX 2012 R3 has Role center Cues and also Cubes . Are these same or any major difference ? Could you guide some more information between these two ? How does Cubes really help to business than cubes ?

Thanks in advance.

I have the same question (0)

    Hi lally,

A good overview of role centers and cues can be found here:

    www.loganconsulting.com/.../

Cube related references can be found here:

A cube is a multidimensional structure, you can use cubes to analyze data in Microsoft Dynamics AX that is otherwise too complex. A cube is a multidimensional structure that provides the basis for developing Business Intelligence (BI) applications.

A cube consists of a set of measures and dimension attributes. For Microsoft Dynamics AX analysis cubes, measures and dimensions are defined in the Application Object Tree (AOT). A perspective is used to identify the tables and views that contain the measures and dimensions.

You can use it to design, create, and manage cubes that contain detailed and aggregated data from multiple data sources and to use the Analysis Services cubes that are included with Microsoft Dynamics AX, or to create custom cubes, you must be familiar with Analysis Services.

A measure is a column in a table or view and Dimensions are groups of attributes.

A Cue provides a visual representation of aggregated business data, such as the number of open sales invoices or the total sales for the month. Cues are interactive, meaning that you can select the Cue to drill down to data or open another page, run code, and more. Cues display data that is contained in a table field. This can be raw data or calculated data.

Cues Web parts display a visual representation of a user's workload and the user's remaining work items, such as sales leads or overdue activities. Users can add cues to their Home Page in the Microsoft Dynamics AX client or to their Role Center page.

Not necessarily. If you look at the cue link that was shared. the data point is the list page and not cube. Hope this helps.

    Hi lally,

I would say that the cubes and the cues are the technical tools or instruments for making a data analysis.

Most financial controllers that I know do their analysis in Excel based on the data that are prepared and pre-calculated in cubes ;-)

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi lally,

Cues are often used in AX2012 for getting a quick overview of something.

    Please see: docs.microsoft.com/.../cues-and-cue-groups

When it comes to a detailed data analysis of e.g. inventory costs, production costs and alike the data from AX2012 are aggregated in a cube - probably enriched by adding calculated measures - and then made available for controllers.

The 'front end' tool that is used for making the analysis is usually Excel.

I cannot share any sample Excel documents from customer project but I hope that you got the idea how it works.

Probably ask in your own finance / accounting department whether they can give you some documents that they use for making their monthly analyses.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

AX 2012 R3 has many standard inventory value or cost reports and also good production reports.

AX transactional data can be exported for a given period and can do analysis .

Still i'm not sure how does Cubes come into picture and how does it really help to business in the real world.

    Hi lally,

Cubes preaggregate the data and allow you thus a much faster analysis and drill down.

You can of course use standard reports or export transactional data, this will however take much longer time.

That's why we have the cubes ;-)

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Lally,

If you want to learn more about cubes, you can read much about this topic on the internet as it is an independent topic; not bound to Dynamics. Start e.g. on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_cube
