New instalation existing DB, SA account question

I've been tasked with moving an acquisitions Dynamics GP system into our datacenter, the GP is historical data only and is being housed for archival purposes. I have the application installed, working ODBC native SQL client connection created and the databases restored but I seem to be running into an issue pointing the app to the database. From what I understand I need to run the GP Utilities application to finish this setup. I have a SQL login, it has sa permissions but is not the sa account, this is because of internal policies that I have no control over. I've tried to use the account I have in the GP Utilities app but keep getting login failed, I've verified the account and access with both the ODBC console and SQL mgmt studio and am starting to think that only the sa account will work, is this correct or is there a workaround?
