Decimal rounding in Quantity field

What is best practice for managing decimals in quantity fields during assembly order processing. For example, 5 units of the assembly component are used to make 6 assembled product units (finished good). This calculates to qty per = .8333 and a quantity to consume of 4.9998. Ideally this would round to 5. I tested setting the qty per = 1 and then overriding the qty to consume = 5. This seems to work well enough but wanted to see if there is anything I am overlooking.
I have the same question (0)

Instead of setting Qty. per = 0.833333, round it intentionally: Use: 0.8333 or 0.833 (based on your company’s acceptable tolerance) This still gives close consumption and reduces precision noise Controlled by:

Inventory Setup → Quantity Rounding Precision â†’ Make sure this allows for some tolerance (e.g., 0.001 or 0.01)

    Thanks, Ramesh

Hi, hope the following can give you some hints.
Business Central 2021 wave 2 (BC19): Rounding for base unit of measure (Quantity Rounding Precision)

    Thanks.

Changing the number of decimal places still results in quantity to consume as a decimal value. If we set the rounding precision to 1 i.e. no decimals, that does not work because it rounds the qty per and not the qty to consume so it will miscalculate the latter.

Maybe this will help clarify things.

In assembly order processing, Business Central calculates quantity to consume based on Qty. Per in the BOM and the order quantity. When decimals are involved (like 0.8333), the result can be fractional and may not round cleanly.

    Best Practices:

    1. Set appropriate rounding precision on the Item card → Unit of Measure for components (e.g., rounding precision = 1).

    2. If the system still calculates non-rounded values, you can manually override the Quantity to Consume on the Assembly Order line — just as you’ve done. That’s a valid and accepted workaround.

    3. Consider using Qty. Rounding Precision in Manufacturing Setup or on Item Units of Measure to automate rounding to the nearest whole unit.

There’s nothing wrong with your approach — just ensure rounding precision is consistent across BOMs and units of measure to avoid future mismatches.
