Explanation of ADFS

I need to understand what exactly is ADFS? I believe Active Directory is a database of sorts that houses all employee information. This is accessed via Outlook, correct? Is ADFS simply technology that allows for single sign on to CRM? So if for example John Smith is in AD and has a CRM account, it will silently authenticate him into CRM?

Hello,

ADFS is a technology which help you to share your identity between trusted partners over extranet, and this is not only for CRM, it can used with other technologies as well.

I am using Dynamics 365 on premise, wich features and cases where ADFS configuration are mandatory ?

ADFS* is required if you want to use IFD (Internet Facing Deployment). Some features that require IFD are:

Use of the mobile client

Some 3rd party tools (especially marketing automation tools like ClickDimensions) require it, so they can connect to CRM over the Internet

Another feature that ADFS provides is auto-logout after a configurable time period

* Strictly, ADFS is just one Secure Token Service (STS) technology, and it is supported to use an alternative STS (e.g. Ping Federate) with CRM for IFD
