weird crm for outlook behavior?

Hello - I'm developing a CRM system with another developer.  We're currently testing and he's using CRM integrated into Outlook.   The email service in the plugin auto-generates and sends an email using the other developer's email address as the From address.

The other developer is saying that the email service won't send the auto-generated email unless his Outlook with CRM integration is open.  This seems kind of quirky.  Is this true?  If so then is there a setting that can be used to override this behavior?

CRM doesn't have native capacity to send emails - as such emails are sent via the Email Router (installed component) or the CRM Outlook Client. Per user this is determined by a setting on their user record in CRM.

The Email Router typically gets installed on a server and is always running. If sending through the CRM Outlook Client - Outlook actually will need to be open and running to process any emails being that it doesn't run as a background service on the local machine.

Thanks Jason, my scenario is that the email router is running in a plugin and sends an email with the From address of a system user.

It seems like the email router action of sending an email should be independent of whether or not the From user used by the email router has his CRM Outlook client open?

Is my assumption correct that these are independent processes or can a configuration be made to make these processes independent?

    Hi Andrew,

As Jason mentioned, any email sent within CRM only gets routed out (delivered) via two methods:

    1. Using Outlook
    2. Email router
    1. Using Outlook means you need Outlook open and with the CRM plugin installed
    2. Using the Email router, this is a service that runs on a server that is constantly monitoring the CRM emails queue, if it finds a new email pending to be sent, it will process this.
So if you looking at an independent process this would be the email router service.
    Hope this helps
