Phantom BOM sub-assembly in GP Manufacturing...how does the item's current cost update?

I have a client with the following issue: they have subassemblies that are phantom BOM's, and the sub-assembly item is set up as FIFO perpetual. It is never actually made on its own, so there's never an MO.

Is there a way to update the current cost for this sub-assembly item automatically without changing it to a Regular BOM?

They don't want to have to process an MO transaction each time, and they don't want to have to manually maintain current costs. Is there another option?
