Purpose of Attribute Modifier

Hi all,

While creating Attribute found that attribute modifier field got updated with value "Catalog", which is disabled to edit.
What is the use of this field? Also in one of the attribute i found that attribute modifier field contains the value "Product".
Does anyone have any idea about the use and difference between both?
