Microsoft USD upgrade to v4.3

Hi,

Microsoft has announced USD deprecation, April next year they have requested us to upgrade to latest version of USD which v4.3.

My question are:

  • Do we have to upgrade both Server and client version of USD or just updating USD client would be fine ?

  • Will there be any restriction by Microsoft and we would still be able to use the USD if we just upgrade the Client to v 4.3?

  • If we don't upgrade, will there be any restriction by which we won't be able to use USD if you don't upgrade.?

  •

Thank you

    Microsoft USD upgrade to v4.3
Furthermore this link for v4.3 includes both client and server update.

So do we need to update both or will client only be sufficient?

    Thank you for your response.

Do you know Microsoft USD support number or email, from where I can get additional confirmations?

    Furthermore, on the third point:
    - If we dont upgrade, i believe we can still keep using the old client and server if we dont update them at all.

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks

    Microsoft USD upgrade to v4.3
    Hello jeffgreenrc,

You're right to be concerned about the upcoming deprecation of older Unified Service Desk (USD) versions. It's crucial to understand the implications and plan your upgrade accordingly. Let's break down your questions:

    Understanding the Deprecation and Upgrade:

Microsoft's push for upgrading to USD v4.3 is primarily driven by:

    • Security: Older USD versions may have vulnerabilities that are addressed in newer releases.
    • Compatibility: Newer USD versions are designed to be compatible with the latest Dynamics 365 Customer Service and related platform updates.
    • Support: Microsoft will eventually cease providing support for older USD versions.

    •

    Answering Your Questions:

    1. Do we have to upgrade both Server and client version of USD or just updating USD client would be fine?

      • Primarily the Client: The most critical component to upgrade is the USD client. This is where the core interaction with Dynamics 365 and the user interface resides.
      • Server Component: The server component of USD is more closely tied to the Dynamics 365 server version. If your Dynamics 365 server is relatively recent, the server-side compatibility might be less of an immediate concern. However, Microsoft generally recommends keeping both client and server components aligned for optimal performance and support.
      • Recommendation: To be safe and fully supported, it is best practice to upgrade both the USD client and any relevant server-side components.

    2. Will there be any restriction by Microsoft and we would still be able to use the USD if we just upgrade the Client to v 4.3?

      • Potential Restrictions: While you might be able to get the USD client to run with an older server component for a short period, it's not a sustainable long-term strategy.
      • Compatibility Issues: Future Dynamics 365 updates could introduce compatibility issues with older USD server components.
      • Support Limitations: If you encounter problems, Microsoft Support might refuse to assist you if you're not running a fully supported configuration.
      • Recommendation: It is highly recommend to upgrade both, to prevent future issues.

    3. If we don't upgrade, will there be any restriction by which we won't be able to use USD if you don't upgrade?

      • Gradual Degradation: It's unlikely that Microsoft will "switch off" USD overnight. Instead, you'll likely experience a gradual degradation of service.
      • Security Risks: You'll be exposed to potential security vulnerabilities.
      • Compatibility Breakage: As Dynamics 365 continues to evolve, your older USD installation will increasingly become incompatible.
      • No Support: You'll lose Microsoft's support.
      • Functionality Issues: New Dynamics 365 features might not work correctly with older USD versions.
      • Recommendation: Staying on an unsupported version is a high risk, and should be avoided.

      •

    4.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Upgrade Both Client and Server: To ensure long-term stability, security, and support, upgrade both the USD client and server components to the latest versions.
    • Prioritize the Client: The USD client upgrade is the most critical.
    • Plan Ahead: Don't wait until the last minute. Plan your upgrade carefully and test thoroughly in a non-production environment.
    • Consult Microsoft Documentation: Always refer to the official Microsoft documentation for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

    •

By taking these steps, you can ensure a smooth transition and maintain a stable and supported USD environment.
