Meltdown patching for SQL server 2012 - Ax 2012 compatibility

I’m trying to find out which version of Ax 2012 that SQL Server 2012 SP4 GDR is compatible with but haven’t been able to find this information online, most likely because SP4 was only released a few days ago

As I understand it, this is a patch for the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerability recently discovered

Just like you, I'm trying to find this thing out too.

    I'm using these two articles:

    support.microsoft.com/.../windows-server-guidance-to-protect-against-the-speculative-execution

    support.microsoft.com/.../guidance-for-sql-server

As I read Dynamics AX 2012 and AX 2009 System requirements documentation, the supported version SQL Server 2012 is only SP3 level and it's highest version Cumulative Update, if you have at least one of this version of AX:

    - AX 2012 R2 with CU9, or

    - AX 2012 R3 with CU10, or

    - and AX 2009 AX 2009 SP1 with Rollup 8 and the hotfix from Knowledge Base article 2836535.

SQL 2012 SP4 not supported at this time by AX.

There is a SQL 20121 SP3 GDR and CU version of the Meltdown/Spectre pathces in this article:

    support.microsoft.com/.../guidance-for-sql-server

I think it would be the best to open a case at MS support to verify this.

    BR,

    Attila

Some fresh news about patches from Intel:

    https://newsroom.intel.com/news/root-cause-of-reboot-issue-identified-updated-guidance-for-customers-and-partners/

It would be the best to wait a little bit.

    Hi UnaFresa,

Please refer to system requirements www.microsoft.com/.../confirmation.aspx document, it says that AX 2012 supports only SQL 2012 SP3, and it was updated last September, so I assume that it has not been tested for compatibility yet.

Thanks for that, I agree, even opening a case with Microsoft will probably result in having to wait while they work out their timelines but if the company insists then I'll do it anyway

Dont do this in Prod directly without testing on test envitonments and think about risk to have not supported configuration.

Of course, wouldn't dream of doing anything like this without going through the proper testing cycle

Got in touch with Microsoft, they replied saying they're not going to do any further compatibility testing but the currently supported versions below will support SQL Server 2012 SP4

    - AX 2012 R2 with CU9

    - AX 2012 R3 with CU10

They also mentioned that R2 will be going out of mainstream support later this year (09/10/2018   -  DD/MM/YYYY)

    So that's the official answer
