Is it possible to make all Jobs require dimensions?

I want to set my Jobs up such that all of them require dimensions to be completed.  Presently, I can go into Jobs, Dimensions and select on a per-job basis what dimensions and values, whether mandatory or not, etc.

Is it possible to set it such that every job has the dimension fields already set up so that the operative has only to select the dimensions from the popup list the appropriate dimension will flow through?

Finally, if it is possible, could you please note down the process?

Thanks in advance

Kind regards

I have the same question (0)

    Hi,

Partially we can achieve this functionality. There is an option called Account Type default dimension. You can assign Account Type default dimension for Job table and then based on your requirement can make it same code, code mandatory etc.

In this way this restriction will put on all job records even on the jobs that will be created after. But this restriction will be shown at the time of posting otherwise if you see individual record no dimension will be shown at.

You can go through this link to get more idea of this. docs.microsoft.com/.../5-account-types

So you have it handled earlier on in the process you might want to consider an app for handling auto creation of dimensions on records like jobs: appsource.microsoft.com/.../pubid.isatech|aid.isa_dimensionmanagement|pappid.e1640487-67e3-48e9-887b-87e2f0e7d9ef

    Hi Bilal

Thank you for your prompt response.

Using the link, I have set five dimensions up as code mandatory on Table 167 - Jobs.

When I then click Ctrl+F5 and create a new job, and select Dimensions, none of the five are listed and I have to add them in again.

Have I the wrong table selected, or do you have any idea of what I might have done wrong for these to not appear please?

    Thanks

    Hi Josh

Thank you for your prompt answer.  We are looking at solutions natively within BC before we consider any external Apps.  Should we have to go the App route, I will have a look at the Isatech solution. Thanks for the pointer.

    Regards

    Simon

    Hi Simon you are welcome.

As I have written in my first post that this will work but you can only see at the time of posting. You will not be able to see the account type default dimension at record level.

    Hi Bilal

Once again, thank you for the speedy response. I have worked through to posting and see where the mandatory control operates.

However, it means that every time an operative creates a new job, they have to select the dimension fields to use and then the values to apply.

Do you know of any method whereby I can set the dimensions up once so that they always appear when the operative chooses job, dimensions?

    Thanks in advance.

    No issues you are welcome.

Coming to your query that is why I said in first post that we can achieve this partially. As per my knowledge the account type dimension works well for putting restriction and copying default value at the time of posting but we cannot see on individual record level.

If you are developer or have development then you can setup like on creation on new Job the dimension values are also setup for that specific record.

Again, thank you for the quick reply.

I was hoping to avoid having to mod the system, as it will probably mean that any further dimensions changed, added or removed will all need coding.

I will see if anyone else offers up a solution that deals with side of it, otherwise will close this in a day or two and mark it as the suggested answer.

Thank you for the partial answer which at least ensures the operatives have to complete the dimensions.

    Kind regards

    Simon

You are most welcome. yes, let see may be someone can give a better answer.

Regarding your concern about development if someone develop it smartly then you can change/add/remove dimensions without need of coding every time. You can use concept of setup table or middle table where values can be changed and updated values/rules are taken by system.

    Hello Simon,

There is the only option to make Dimension Mandatory as Bilal mentioned but it is only working at the time of posting and it is not assigning default dimensions on the Job.

To do this functionally, you can use work around by creating a Template Job which only holds the Dimensions on the header. (You can also create tasks if you have standard tasks which needs to copy to new Job)

Now, you can create new job by using Copy Job function so all the dimensions from template Job will get copied to new job.

I am adding screen shots from the On-premise business central but you can do the same in Saas version too.

Step 1: Create Template Job with only Dimension

Step 2: Create New Job by Copy Job Option

Create new job by providing highlighted information

Step 3: Job is created with Dimensions copied from the Template Job

I hope this work around will work for you.

    Saurabh
