Data and settings copy from PROD to Sandbox environment

Hello,

We are working with Dynamics 365 for Sales and using Power Platform. We have 2 environments:

  • PROD. Solutions are managed
  • Sandbox. Solutions are unmanaged

We want to make the data and settings copy from PROD to Sandbox for testing purposes. We are aware of the function copy described here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/copy-environment
However, it makes an exact copy of PROD instance and all solutions are overwritten from PROD as managed with no possibility to continue customizations. Therefore, could someone explain what is the best practice and recommended approach for this action without losing customizations and ability to customize system in Sandbox environment. Maybe there are any tools that can be recommended for that?

Thanks for the answer

    Hi

you would use the configuration migration tool to accomplish this. However certain configurations cannot be imported. This is a shortcoming in Dynamics 365 CE. These are settings such as fiscal calendar, unit and unit groups, templates, etc.

For those type of non movables you’d use a manual intervention inside your ALM.

let me know if you require more information.

Hi Martin - there's a vendor called OwnBackup. they have a tool that lets you copy specific subsets of data of PROD so it doesn't overwrite your sandbox. They might do something for Microsoft - you could look into it.
