Leads -> Opportunities -> Accounts and Contact

I am setting up a new CRM install for a customer and they want the flow to go

Lead -> Opportunity -> Account and Contact

I can find inside the lead form how to convert the Lead to an Opportunity, but I do not see an option in the Opportunity section to convert a won Opportunity to an Account.

If I understand the process correctly. You need to convert a lead to an Opportunity and an Account at the same time.

You cannot convert an Opportunity to An Account without typing the information back in or going back and reopening the lead and reconverting it to an account?

Basically:

Lead convert to Opportunity, Contact

Close Opportunity Won -> Go back to Closed Lead and reopen it an convert to an Account and Contact, but this has the side effect of creating two contacts.

Is there a better way to do this?

I see the process going

Lead converts to Opportunity, Account and Contact

If Opportunity is Lost you need close the Opportunity as Lost and to go into Account and delete the Account and contact as part of a maintenance phase.

If Opportunity is Won you close the Opportunity as Won and go into Account and continue the CRM process.

Any help or experience would be useful

Thanks

DAN

First of all, space is cheap so as long as it doesn't affect usability I'm a big promoter of capturing as much as possible. To this end, I say expand the definition of an Account from 'a business we've sold to' to 'a business we've interacted with'. If you never want to see Accounts you haven't sold to, set up a default attribute on the Account to denote them as a 'no buy' and then when an opportunity is closed-won have a workflow change the flag to 'bought something'. You can then use this flag to filter your views. From a sales perspective, this also means you can revisit lost deals and re-open them if circumstances change. You may have lost the opportunity to a competitor but 6 months down the track the customer is realising they made the wrong decision and want to engage you. If you've deleted the Account you have no record of what they were after, what you promised or who dealt with them. Leon Tribe Want to hear me talk about all things CRM?      I am in the same situation with my company.

They want the process to go Leads --> Prospects (opportunities) -- > Account and Contacts

I've tried explaining to them almost exactly as you stated "I say expand the definition of an Account from 'a business we've sold to' to 'a business we've interacted with'." But they simply can not grasp that idea. I even changed the name of the "Account" entity to "Companies", but they still believe that any record in this entity should be an active client. I've fought this battle for almost 6 months but they still do not get it. I'm at the point where I just need to make it do what they want so they will start using it.

The only option I can think of is creating a custom entity to replace Opportunities.

So the process would be Leads -- > Prospects (new entity)  -- > Accounts and Contacts

Does anyone know how I can modify Dynamics to convert a Lead to a custom entity? Then convert that custom entity to an Account?

Actually now that I think about it, this would totally mess up the Sales Pipeline. So is there anyway to make Opportunities not require a  "Potential Customer"? And when you close the Opportunity create an Account?

I couldn't figure out a way to get the opportunity to "not require" a connection to the Contact or Account entity. Fortunately I got my company to accept the Account=Any company contact definition. I was about to explore redefining the relationships between Opportunity and Account and Contact, however my gut tells me the things you would need/want to change are no longer editable. I stopped looking into it but a custom entity looked like the best bet.... good luck.
