Email a link with Chrome

We use Dynamics CRM 2011 UR13 mainly with Chrome. Has anyone a idea why the "Email a link" action within a contact, account or activity etc. form does not work via Chrome? It works with IE, but nothing happanes when using Chrome, is there any seting in Chrome we miss etc? We use it in conjunction with Outlook while Outlook is even open at that time. It's not a rights issue either, as I said the same action works fine with IE. Also, in Chrome "Copy a link" is completely disabled, while "Email a link" is not (even though is not working).

Chrome is blocking the email link scripts which it considers to be unsafe.

After clicking on an email link you will notice a shield icon in the address-bar indicating that Chrome thinks the site is "unsafe".  Pressing F12 will also indicate the script is blocked.

To enable you can click the shield and turn on the "unsafe" script or turn off this feature by adjusting how Chrome is started:

    chrome.exe --allow-running-insecure-content

great job, thanks. If you now also can tell me how I can set this to be true by default for certain websites, i.e. it look sto me that once I click the shield, it only applies to the curent browser window/session. I would like to have this set not always, but always for some sites, similar to some Internet Explrere settings one can do for local network, intranet etc...

    cheers,

    Dieter

    Hi Dieter,

As far as I know it is only per session by clicking the shield or for all web sites with the shortcut adjustment.

Even if the site is in the trusted sites it has no effect and I couldn't find any other area in Chrome that could set this.

    Hello Dieter,

Cause for this issue is that Outlook is not configured as the default “Mailto” client for Chrome Browser. So you can follow below steps to resolve this issue and post here if it helps you.

    A) Configure Outlook as the default program and the default Mail to client by following below steps.

    1) Make Outlook the default program under Outlook > File > Options >  General  > Start-up Options > Check the box that says “Make Outlook the default program”.

    2) Navigate to Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Default Programs > Set Program Associations > Under List of programs, select Google Chrome > On the right hand side bottom, click on the option which says “Choose Defaults for this program” > Set program association window will open up, in that window under protocols check for Mailto protocol if it shows up as Outlook, if it shows up as chrome, just check the box and hit the save button. This will set Outlook as the Mail to program for Google chrome browser.

    B) Now, configure Chrome Browser to allow unsafe scripts execution by following below steps.

    1) Right click on your "Chrome" icon.

    2) Choose properties

    3) At the end of your target line add the command line flag (--allow-running-insecure-content)after which the target line would look like “chrome.exe” --allow-running-insecure-content

    Regards,

    Satish

Thanks Satish, very detailed explanation, great. The key to success is the "--allow-running-insecure-content" parmater for chrome.exe. I was not aware of this parameter.

Still, the shortcoming of this solution is that now I always run Chrome by allowing insecure content, whatever this means in particular. I would prefer a solution similar to IE where you can choose different security settings for local intranet etc. Such a solution is not provided by Chrome?

    thanks a lot, Dieter

    Hi Satish,

Just to be clear the issue has nothing to do with the default Mailto client.  It only depends on the insecure content scripting.  if the script is blocked nothing will happen regardless.

Google Chrome inherits security settings of Internet Explorer and you can check this option in chrome by navigating to Settings>Show advanced settings>Change Proxy Settings(Under Network) and after clicking on it you will see that Internet Explorer settings option are opened.

'Email a link' option is expected to work in Chrome.  There is probably an issue with the install of Chrome that overrides Outlook as the default email provider on the machine.  So you can try making Outlook the default program under Outlook > File > Options >  General  > Start-up Options?

If option is checked then you will need to follow below steps on problem system so that you don't have allow insecure content always and after that you should be good.

I will disagree with Kodiak here. Ideally, when you click on Email a link in CRM, then a new email window should open while accessing CRM via chrome however in Dieter's case it's not same and if Email a link is not behaving as expected then definately because of default Mailto client as it has not been configured/set to work with Google Chrome and you can ensure mailto is working right by typing “mailto:?subject=MySubject&body=MyBody” (remove inverted commas while putting this in chrome) in the chrome URL bar. If that doesn’t open Outlook than it’s not CRM related.

    Satish

    Satish,

There's nothing to disagree with.  Chrome is blocking the script that generates that mailto action.

If the script is blocked then nothing happens - it is plain for everyone to see if they check the script window in the browser.

In Dieter's case the link was being blocked as unsecure - you can see that from the shield icon that pops up in the address bar and the fact that he had accepted my comment as an answer before you started posting your rubbish.

    1. Default mail clients can do nothing if the script is blocked.
    2. It has absolutely nothing to do with Chrome overriding anything - the script is blocked.
    3. I could have my default mailto set to anything - it would not pop up as the script generating it is blocked.

    Satish,

You are incorrect - Chrome only uses the Proxy/Network settings that are shared with IE.

If you click Content Settings under Privacy these security options look nothing like those in IE.

Does anyone know if this config works when you launch your shortcut/url as a chrome app?  I tried putting this in front of the --app but it still blocks it.
