how can a global company localize its product descriptions within CRM

I am looking for advice on how to localize product descriptions within a global company.

We have business units that sell the same product worldwide.  Each location wants to use their own localized name and description of the product when quoting.   In CRM it appears that there can be only one product name and description for each unique product id.

Can anyone recommend an approach that they have used successfully to address this need?

    Hi Dave,

If my understanding is correct you want to give different names and description for the product. If so I think this is a limitation as every product ID and we cannot create another product suing the same product ID.

I am looking for any option if available and will update you.

    Thanks,

    Mohammad

    Hi Mohammad,

Yes, you understood correct.  For a single product ID (used globally within our company) we need to have multiple product names and descriptions to accommodate the local language that the quote is to be generated in.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Dave,

How many different languages do you need for the description?

I think that a good approach would be to add description multiple lines of text boxes to the Product Form and allow each "division" to add a description on their respective language.

On the Quote Product form, add a drop down for the language the product will be in and have a javascript fill in the Description field within the form with the description field written in the selected language.

The quote can print the description from the Quote Product instead of the Product itself.

    Does that make sense?

    Hi Gus,

I currently know of two additional languages that we would need.  I anticipate there could  be additional  languages over time.  We had considered something similar but had not worked out how on the Quote Product form we would determine which name to use.  Your suggestion on the use of a drop down with javascript would give us more flexibility than say coding off the user Business Unit.

The other thought I am having is to move our product number out of CRM's Product ID attribute and into a custom attribute.  This would allow us to have multiple names and descriptions for a single part number and not violate the unique constraint on Product ID.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Dave,

How are you printing your Quotes?

I ask because I like your idea of a separate entity for Products but that would only work really good if you have some third party tool to print these quotes directly to Microsoft Word or soemthing like that.

If you are somehow printing these quotes via regular out of the box mail merge then I think you should focus on the out of tthe box quotes and products.

By the way, here is a tool that will do the one click print to work functionality I mention above:

    Good Luck!
