Dear All,

In my company our consultant is proposing to open 12 financial dimension for analytic. I want to know that what is the best practice. What I learn from Microsoft Dynamics Ax Training is that you have to balance, this much dimension is not appreciated.

So can any one help to What are the best practices and what are the advantage and disadvantage of this.

Regards,

Asif Fattah

    Hi Asif,

This really depends on the requirements on e.g. reporting. Can you tell about the purpose of each dimension? I have seen scenarios with none or only one dimension, but also nine dimensions. When converting customers from an older version to AX 2012 in some cases we could continue with less dimensions compared the the previous dimension, but in another scenario we decided to have more as some dimensions were used for multiple purposes on different account to avoid extending the dimension.

At first sight I think 12 is much, but again it depends on the situation.

Yes, the number of dimensions depends on requirements - and resulting structure. E.g. possibly a dimension can be replaced with adding some (more) main accounts, or reporting is not only done in Finance but a mix of e.g. Finance and other module data (like a lot of project details in the project module).

Anyway: I've never seen a solution applying this large number of dimensions.

It also depends on how the dimensions are actually going to be used. If most of the 12 dimensions you mention are going to be used on only several accounts, this might not be that big of a problem. We sometimes used them this way, like a dimension that is used for a very specific thing on one or two accounts only.

If, however, you plan to have something like 10 dimensions on one account, this is going to cause difficulties. If the dimensions have to be filled in manually, it will make for a very poor user experience. Even if the dimensions are automatic, you will get a lot of financial transaction (because every amount has to be broken down into a lot of dimension combinations).

I agree with previous comments. I just want to add that dimension should serve a greater clarity of results and not to create more confusion. It is possible that the 12 dimensions will be used effectively, but to appreciate effectiveness of their number would be necessary to know the purpose of each dimension. If they made a different dimension groups on the basis of observed results for certain combinations of dimensions, why not. Personally, I met with a maximum of 5 dimensions.
