Work Order Creation where yield unknown

Hi,

I am just looking for a bit of advice on best practice in the following circumstances.

As a juice production business, the yield of how many bottles of juice on a production cycle varies. Each production run could produce a different yield. With that in mind, is it possible to input a theoretical finished goods output on a works order for the purpose of production but then change the yield after the production has completed but before the works order is ended?

What would be best practice from a system process point of view?

Thanks!

One thing you can do is leave the Production Order in Firm Planned status until the actual work is done. This way you are then still able to modify the Production Order quantity once you know exactly how many bottles you produced. However, doing it this way requires back-flushing all the Raw Material components (consuming the components after the job has completed) and may give you inventory headaches. This is because you can only print and process the Picklists for Released Production Orders.

You can change the quantity on a Released Production Order and then Refresh the Production Order, but you may run into an issue doing that if the Raw Material components have already been consumed for the original amount?... give that a test and report back.

You could also Release a Production Order for a certain amount, but then use the Production Journal to output a lesser amount than was originally intended to be produced... but if you go over (over produce) then I think you'll run into the need to create a second Production Order for that extra amount.

So, until further testing on actual Released Production Orders... I believe you can under produce the Order quantity and return the unused Raw Material components, but if you over produce I don't know if you'll be able to capture the additional consumption of the extra Raw Material components - that's why I mentioned created a second Production Order for that extra amount (so you can pick the components too).

Today I did a little testing for this issue:

    Over-produce what was intended:

I was able to modify the Quantity on a Released Production Order, Refresh it, then Create a new Pick for the additional components needed, Register that additional pick, then use the Output Journal to output the new full amount. In this scenario all RM components got consumed and I was successfully able to output more than the original order quantity.

    Under-produce what was intended:

I am able to close a job short and use the Output Journal to output the lesser amount than was originally planned. The problem is returning the unused Raw Material components... I tried to post a negative amount for each of the Raw Material components using the Production Journal (and I thought this would work), however, when I posted NAV did not adjust the amounts that were previously picked. I know we can use On-hand adjustment to get this done, however there should be a way to properly return unused Raw Material components when a Production Order is closed short of the quantity that was originally intended.
