Copy development from one environment to other using import organisation

Posted on by 293

Hi

I have a development environment and, for different reasons, I would like to leave this environment as it is and continue customizing in a second development environment. The first development environment has multiple solutions that include the customizations that have been developed, however, if I export them and import them I get different errors, mostly compatibility and around missing components.

I would like to know if I can back up the database from the Dev 1 environment, restore it in Dev 2 environment SQL server, import as a new organisation in Dev 2 environment to copy the customizations between environments.  Is all development stored on the database or is anything saved on the file system or the config database.

Thanks in advance

Teresa

In addition to Kokulan's response, based on your plugin deployment method, if it s stored on the disk, you need to move your reference dll into new environment as well.

Yes you can back up the DB from Dev 1 environment and restore to Dev2 Env sql server. And once restored, if you import the org on Dev Env2, all your customizations and components will be brought across.

    docs.microsoft.com/.../import-an-organization

All the customizations are stored in the instance (org) database.

However, you may want to spend some time to find out why the components are failing and fix any issues. In the long run, if you will be upgrading to latest versions or moving to cloud, you will end up sorting these all out anyway.

    Hope this helps
