usage of Quantity Short option

I want to know about QtyShrtOpt field functionality. How does it work ? If Item quantity has 0 in GP , we ordered the same item with some quantity ( ex :5) . Will QtyShrtOpt  adjust the quantity in GP?. like Quantity Avaiable is -5 showing in Sales order line window ?.
