Automate cliënt R2 R3 update

Hi all,

I am working together with a smaller customer who does not use SCCM of GPO.

When installing AX 2012 R2 I simply created a batch file wich installed the neccesary prerequisites before starting a silent AX setup with a parameter file.  This sorta works in not too lange deployments.

Now the customer wants to update to AX 2012 R3. I don't see another way to easily update the clients other than creating another ugly.bat wich uninstalls the old AX client components first, installs a few new prereq's before installing a new client.

Anyone got some experience with this? Some tips maybe?

To make it a little less ugly, you could use Powershell Desired State Configuration. Nevertheless I§ve never tried to use it for AX clients.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

In the end I wrote a ugly.bat it checks for the existance of certain registry files and if neccesary installs or removes certain prerequisites. It works for blank installations as well as installations with older versions. (btw AX cannot upgrade the client or setup support files, you need to remove them)

    Steps (in sequence):

    install .net 3.5 & 4.5

    uninstall old Client & add-ins

    uninstall old setup support files

    Install SQL server clr types

    Install Report viewer

    Install MSChart

Call the AX setup.exe with parmfile

Keep in mind that the client and setup support files have different uninstallers and installers on 32 and 64 bit systems.

    Note:

AX has a option in the installer\ parmfile wich automatically configures prerequisites. However simply adding a component like mschart in the "redist" folder does not work.

Note 2: The prerequisite "windows identity foundation 3.5" is a windows feature on certain systems. Installing this wil trigger a reboot during the AX setup wich cannot be cancelled. The AX setup will not continue automatically after the reboot.
