Management Reporter Report Library

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We recently upgraded from MR 2012 CU5 to CU12.  MR CU12 was installed on a new server (we couldn't install CU5 on the new server because it was not compatible with Windows Server 2012 or SQL 2014), building blocks from MR CU5 were exported, and those building blocks were imported into the new MR CU12.  All was well until we realized that none of the security came over.  Not a big deal, we can set that up again.  However, now we have realized that none of our Report Library files/folders/security exists on the new server.  Did we miss an important step in transitioning from the old to the new?  Is there a way to restore the Report Library to my new MR CU12 server?

BTW... the user that installed is typically an admin in MR unless that user was removed after the fact, for some reason.

    Hi Michelle

Many thanks for your quick response. I'm waiting on the clients security admin getting back to me with the account info of the originall installer.  In the meantime I tested what you said using two different users and you are exactly right!

That is crazy!  Thank you so very much.  You may just have saved me another few days of pulling my hair out (not sure why this info isn't more readily availabile).

If you are ever in Northern Ireland I owe you a beer!

    Paddy,

I did a totally fresh install, used the same master key id, configured everything and then restored the MR database.  I have found that ANY time that I have to rebuild a datamart, I have to be logged on to the server as the user who originally installed and created the MR database.  Having the admin rights in MR just doesn't seem to suffice.  And, the above error is the one I receive when I forget to be logged in as the proper user.  All of my installs of MR for clients have utilized a specific user id for this purpose.  So whatever domain user was utilized on the old server to perform the initial install of MR on the server is the user you need to be logged in as when rebuilding the datamart.  I have attempted MANY times to just provide the credentials and it ALWAYS fails until I login as that user.

    Hi Michelle

Did you have any issues with the data mart after doing that.

When I restore the database it drops the data mart (which I guess is expected) because the datamart does not exist on the new SQL box yet.

This wouldn't be a problem only when I go to configure a new datamart I get a generic error saying: "the Datamart Cannot be configured due to an error on the server, for more information see your deployment log." But there is no more information in the deployment logs.

"The Datamart could not be configured due to an error on the server, for more information see your deployment log." But there is no more information in the deployment logs.

But there is no more information in the deployment logs.

As a workaround, we are able to install a new MR database instead and export/import building block groups but this poses its own problem in that all the folders and reports in the Report Library in the Report Viewer are missing.

If anyone knows how to move the Report Library structure from one server to another, or how to fix the generic error above that would be great!

    Vicki,

I just moved MR from one server to another because of performance issues.  I installed MR creating all new databases and utilized the same master key as my existing.  I then took a backup of the MR database (not the MR DM) restored it by changing all of the file locations to overwrite the new MR database that I had created and marking the overwrite existing database.  Started all of the services on the new server and had all of the users, security, building blocks and Report Library as was on the old server.

    Hi Vicki,

Looks like your partner didn't made a lot of MR migrations so far :-)... Yes, I'd start from scratch and delete the existing MR database on your new server (unless you already have done some work with it, in which case I would save the building block by exporting them and bring them back after the restore / upgrade has been completed).

Un-install everything related to CU12 on the new server and remove the DB on the SQL server. Restore the backup from your CU5 setup and then re-apply the CU12 and proceed with the upgrade.

Yes, per my Partner's "guidance" we only copied over the building blocks from CU5.  I just tried to restore a copy of my ManagementReporter database from CU5 to my new CU12 server, but I am getting the error:

Restore of database 'ManagementReporter' failed.  The database set holds a backup of a database other than the existing "ManagementReporter' database.

Since I had already setup an MR integration on my new CU12 server, do I need to disable that integration, restore my MR database, and then enable my integration?

    Vicki,

Did you only copy over to the new server the building blocks from the old CU5 release ? what about your existing Database ManagmentReporter2012 ? If you take a backup of that database, restore it over on the new SQL 2014 server, install CU12 and do the upgrade, you should be all set and not security will get lost, nor will you have to export / import your building blocks...

Let me know if you need more assistance.

    Vicki,

I suspect you will need to reach out to Microsoft for a solution to this one. As with most products we work with moving Management Reporter from one machine to another invariably requires some script(s) to copy the settings and/or change the references from one machine to another. I haven't seen anything like this on the Security Settings for Management Reporter, and have yet to be forced to look.
