Scrap factor in Bill of Materials

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello - I need to figure out how to get a "Scrap" or "Shrinkage" factor into a manufacturing order in GP. For example, our drawing for a specific part (ie 24T0048-001) is calling out 5 pcs per build. I would like to have a scrap factor of 1 additional pc per build to take into account a scrap pin on each cable. I would like this to deduct out of inventory when we post the Manufacturing order. We are using Bill of Material. Is there any way to do this besides individually changing each BOM? I would like the BOM to keep matching our drawings and just have a "scrap factor" built into GP.

RE: Scrap factor in Bill of Materials

At the component level in GP on the Bill of Material Card, you can associate a shrinkage factor. If you are maintaining tons of Bills of Materials you can use WilloWare's BOM Import Utility.

Here is an excerpt from the GP Documentation on how to configure default shrinkage factors for items.

Shrinkage for bill of materials components:

When you enter or select an item to add to a bill of materials, the default shrinkage percentage for the item typically comes from the Item Resource Planning Maintenance window. However, different rules apply if the replenishment method for the item is Make or if the item is a phantom item. Refer to the following table for more information.

    Replenishment Method

    Default shrinkage percentage

    Buy

Comes from the Item Resource Planning Maintenance window.

    Make

No default shrinkage percentage is supplied.

    Make or Buy

A message appears when you add a make or buy item to a bill of materials, and you’ll have the option to select the bill of materials type for the item.

If you choose Yes—if quantities of this item should be made—you’ll need to select a bill of materials type. If you choose Phantom, the default shrinkage percentages for the components of the phantom item will come from the Item Resource Planning Maintenance window.

If you choose No—if quantities of the item should be purchased—no default shrinkage percentage is supplied.

Regardless of the default shrinkage percentages, you can change them in the Shrink % field for each component, if needed.

are you looking  to find a way to run an update for the items in BOMs be populated for shrinkage instead of going through each item and entering the shrinkage which will obviously take tons of hours if you have more 10-20?
