Actually that depends on how you want to report on trial balance and how you want to report the fixed asset groups.
As far as I experienced, It is usually one GL account per fixed asset group but more than one group can be assigned to one GL account too.

suddenly we experienced duplication of the P&L entries when disposing of assets, couldn't figure out why
since we didn't change any thing, have any one faced a similar situation?
I've seen this with clients who have recently upgraded. Check this parameter, make sure it is set to "No".
Confirm that you don't have both of these transaction types in your disposal posting profiles.
These two settings seem to contribute to the duplicate postings on disposals.
