Is it possible to increase the stringsize of Product Dimension "Configuration Name" AX2012R3

Hi DAXers,

I would like to increase the stringsize of the ExtendedDataType "EcoResConfigurationName" that would affect the filed EcoResConfiguration.Name from 10 to 20 as company requirement.

but I am afraid that it may affect other related fields!

Does anyone tried this before? what is the related fields that could be affected? what is the possible danger that I could face if I did?

thanks for your help.

warm regards,

    Hi Ahmed,

When you change an EDT, it will also change all fields and variables based on this EDT. However it is not clear if values are used in other variable types. To find out, you could update cross-references and see where all fields are used in coding.

But... it would be better to not change this length. Can you indicate why the business required this? It is really the first time I do hear about this requirement for this EDT.

    Hi Andre,

    Thanks for your prompt response.

The company is producing metal doors and frame that has special specification for each piece. So, in order to define each quotation and sales order lines and then production order, we have to utilize the length of production dimension name as long as possible.

I would advise against it too. I once tried to do the same with a similar EDT. First it would definitely affect all fields/EDTs based on this one. Plus it took me a whole lot of work to track down all the places where other local variables and other EDTs were being used to assign values with smaller(Older) length since information was not being stored completely even after increasing the length.

Although nobody can actually stop from wanting to try it out in a test environment. I wouldn't say there is any danger. Andre please correct me if I am wrong here.

But Ahmed, try to find another way to save any additional information needed.

    Thank you all,

I have take your advice, and reengineered the process in order to assign the creation of the configuration to someone else in the process and utilizing the available 10 digits using numbers only to create unique code for each SO line.

thanks for your prompt responses and advices.
