Scheduling overtime in AX2009 (Finite capacity)

Hi All

We are in the process of implementing and improving our MRP production planning. Currently we use Finite capacity for when we do the Job Scheduling (using Priority-Delivery Date Sorting and direction as Forward from scheduling date).

This works generally very well if we have sufficient capacity to execute the plan. However if capacity is insufficient planner would often like to schedule overtime.  I could not find an easy way of doing it rather than go and manually change the calendar for the specific Work Centre to allow more working hours on that day.  I wonder if it is the best way of doing it (and this is how other members of the community do it) or there are other better ways.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Yes. That is the only way. This is where the system checks for capacity.

The process is vastly improved in AX 2012.

Hi Dimitry - a couple of ideas:

    1) Would calendar deviations help to to change the working times for your work centres?

    2) how sbout defining your calendar working times with a Property 'Overtime' on overtime hours.  Job schedule with 'Finite property' for your first cycle, using only normal hous, and then if you want to schedule using overtime hours re-schedule with 'Finite property' ticked.

Frederick - why do you say this process is improved in AX2012?

I believe that resource calendar deviations was presented in AX 2012 with a much better interface for changing calendars for a group or resource.

So you can easily say that for example on next Wednesday (and only that Wednesday) the calendar for a resource should be calendar "overtime" and not standard "production" calendar.

    Hi Tim

    Thank you for your help!

1). I understand calendar deviations are appropriate if work centre is using more than one calendar (say summer calendar and winter calendar). Thanks for pointing this to me. We will probably use this functionality if we say decide to run with an extra shift for a week or two before returning back to a routine hours

2). This sounds very much what I am after (say we just want to run extra 2 hours overtime on Wednesday). But I don't see 'Overtime' property anywhere on the working times screen. Is it definitely available in AX2009? This is what my screen looks like:

    Thanks again!

Ah, sorry, you don't have the Production III licence. You said 'Job scheduling' in your email, which is enabled by Production III. I assume you don't have that option - so you only have 'Operations scheduling'. Sorry - been working on AX 2012 (with all modules available) for too long. I think it's be worth you looking at Production III. You'll get Properties and 'Dispatching'. But it's not cheap, so at the same time it'd be worth looking at ISV solutions (either inside or outside of AX) - mostly the ISV AX solutions will need Production III I think, so these guys would be worth talking to: http://www.aspectpt.com/

Thanks Fredrik. I documented the AX 2012 Calendar Deviations function here

Been a while since I looked at AX 2009.

Hi Tim. We are looking to buy PIII license and we currently have access to it in a DEV mode. I have now checked it and I can't see the 'Overtime' property either. This is a screenshot from PIII version and for me it looks identical:

    Am I missing something?

    Thanks!

Property is there as a field to the right of Efficiency percentage. You'll need to create a main table entry 'Overtime' and then you'll be able to define it (but best to do this via a Working time template)

Does changing efficiency affect you production estimations? The resource will now be planned with more or less time on the operation, but still have the same price pr. hour.
