Inventory Scanner RMS2.0 - what do you use?

Trying to find an inventory scanner to use with Microsoft RMS 2.0. Considering the Opticon OPH1004. Has anyone used this? What scanner do you use? What is your process for uploading the inventory? Trying to find something budget conscious, easy to use, etc. THANKS!

We sell/rent the sp5500 by Metrologic.  Simple inventory scanner, we have programming that we load that allows the use of a lookup table of your item codes to detect scanning errors while doing inventory.

Simple process of counting a section, downloading that batch to the computer and importing into the physical inventory in RMS.

We have used some different scanners for our stores, but the one i like the best is unitech ht630 they are old school.  They are easy to use easy to program and are hardy oh and not as expensive as some of the others. That is one thing i really don't understand with these scanners is the cost all you are wanting is to create a csv file.

What OS are you using Windows 7 OR 8.1? Please see following link to this solution that came up with for Windows 8.1 and it works great for one store. This solution can easily be extended.

This is within my budget [less than $500 and you own everything] and you don't have to actually transfer files from any other source. It is just matter of being comfortable with the set up. You could use more than one Tablets to perform the inventory by just selecting the different departments on each tablets and you can expedite the process.

For the most economical solution, we use any scanner that can create a batch file (CSV, etc.), and then use Stevens Creek or STS (Special Technology Solutions) Inventory Rollup tool software (only $100-$200). As Brian mentioned, this is not interactive - you would scan everything, and only get the errors when loaded.

For the next step up we often use a Windows Mobile device with the STS Inventory Count module, which has an interactive UI and is connected to your DB over WiFi. You can also add other modules or get a suite that can manage items, do POs, WOs, Transfers, Label printing, etc.

Several other companies make these modules, and we are experimenting with some, like Retail Realm's Mobile suite.

Also depends if you want to be able to use the same units for actual POS as well, with card swipe etc.; within your WiFi network only or outside as well; and if you want to be able to work directly with the HQ DB or not since each company and module offer different capabilities.

Lately we have been using mainly the Janam and Datalogic units:

Janam for the best features/value, and you can use the Stevens Creek SW with the installed Palm OS that costs less than Windows Mobile. This way we can use and support only one device as much as possible, since we also use the Janams with Palm OS for some other applications we provide.

Datalogic for more model options and tech (great Scanning Engine, "Green Spot" scan confirmation, parsing SW).

    Hello,

We just completed our inventory of 6 stores with 2-3 teams working on the same inventory. Here is what we did:

    1. Kicked out an "Item Value List" in CSV format

    2. Modified the report to only show item number (SKU), item description, and a column for inventory (we put that whole column as 0's to maintain integrity)

2a. We locked the item number and item description columns so that they could not be edited, and made a max value input of the inventory of 1000 (so that if they try to scan a SKU, it will not put that as an inventory number)

    3. We saved the CSV as an Excel (only way to enforce the locked columns)

    4. Used the find field to scan the SKU's to find the item in our Excel sheet.

    5. The user would then enter the total inventory in that row.

Like i mentioned that we had multiple teams working in the same store, so we have multiple files to merge to get the total inventory. Once that was done, we imported that back into RMS and checked/re-checked our deltas.

We do have a one page write-up of the end user instructions and can send that to you if you are interested.

Sorry, forgot to mention that we used Wasp USB bi-color bar code scanners. $200-250/each. We ran 2-3 (1 per team) at each store.

    Brian,

Any idea how many aliases and ILCs the Metrologic sp5500 can hold in the lookup table?

    Thanks, Ben

It depends of course on length of sku/alias, but I have seen it get full between 20k-40k.

It can take a few minutes to transfer that many, say 5-10minutes.

Thanks for the response. Would you know of something similar that has a larger capacity?
