Asset is mandatory in Asset Management > Work Order

In F&O while creating a Work Order asset is mandatory. We are a facilities management organization. Most of our work orders do not require an asset. Is there any method to save a work order without an asset?

Can we do a customization to make the asset optional?

The workaround in mind is to create dummy assets but we will end up creating 1000s of dummy assets.

Hi Judy,

I am a newbie with D365 and I am looking for other consultants advise. I am not sure if a personalised form will work. Our requirement is that the Asset must be optional in Work Order record.

Hi Community members,

Updating the replies so that who ever reads this article later, will have proper answer.

Since the asset number is mandatory to fill in the work order line, you must go with the assets selection.

Since this is in context of Facilities management organization (assuming repair in different towers of a cluster), then they will definetely have Functional location created for all clusters, all towers, all Flats and also the assets on the same, so they must use these while doing any repair and maintenance.

Hi Madhav,

Instead of forcing Asset Management to behave against its design, you can leverage other standard features in D365 F&O, like Project Management and Accounting, that are more flexible for non-asset work.
