How can we enter a fixed asset with a cost basis less than $0.00?

Hello,

My company is looking for a way to enter a negative cost basis for an asset in Microsoft Dynamics GP or a workaround solution to achieve this goal.  We have two different scenarios requiring a "contra asset" and cannot record these in the fixed assets sub ledger.  The Asset Book window will not accept entry of a cost basis less than $0.00.  Our current solution is for an accountant to track the negative depreciation manually and make a monthly entry directly in the GL.  We will list this as a product suggestion, but don’t know if/when the Microsoft development team will consider it.  SAP can manage contra assets, so we must not be the only company with the business requirement.  Any suggestions or information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

Bottom line is, GP will not let you enter an Acquisition Cost of less than zero and it for sure won't calculate negative depreciation.  However, you could enter an asset with a zero value and change the Acquisition Cost to a negative value in the FA00100 table.  Not sure how this would affect data integrity going forward, so I would caution against using the method.

so perhaps a dumbo question - what if i have a credit note for an asset that i want to  / need to put into fa on its own, and not tie to the original purchase?

No can do - but you can enter it as an adjustment to the original asset Acquisition Cost.  Just click on the little blue arrow to the right of the Acquisition Cost field and enter the adjustment.
