Please help - unable to upload Mail Merge template to CRM

We encountered a strange problem this morning:  One of our Dynamics users was attempting to do a mail merge for the first time.  When Microsoft Word opened, the document contained a bunch of XML on the right side and instructions in the main text pane telling us to Click the "CRM" button to begin the mail merge.  Most other users go straight to the dialog box that confirms the mail merge addressees.  We were able to get past this problem by clicking the CRM button at the top of Microsoft Word.

The problem that we can't get past is that there is no option to upload the final template to CRM.  All other users have this option.  Can somebody help us understand whether this is a Dynamics configuration problem or an MS Office configuration problem?  We are using Dynamics 4.0 and Office 2003.

Thanks for your time!

    Rajiv -

Thanks for responding - we noticed the same thing.  However, in this case the user is on the Outlook client.

    Hi Dan,

I'm not sure if you've solved the problem yet, but after battleing my way through the mail merge function recently I may be able to help!

when I perform a mail merge (usually for a quote to a customer) I always see the xml code, when i click the CRM button (in word 07 on the 'add ins' tab on the ribbon) it all disappears. Are you saying when you do this it doesn't disappear?

One reason could be that the template that is uploaded onto dynamics has all the code already on it, which is easily done when you chose the 'edit template in word' option from dynamics and save the template before click crm.

Check the code is not there on the template file that is stored on the computer, then chack that file is uploaded onto dynamics. If you edit the template and save it locally, it does not automatically update the file on CRM! That caught me out a few times, but obvious when you think about it!

As for being unable to upload the template, I would take a guess at this being an user rights issue. Is everyone else an administrator?

Not sure if any of this helps, it's hard to tell when the problem is not infront of you!

Doug - Thanks for the response.  We solved the problem by removing and then re-installing the CRM client.
