Business Central Copying and Pasting rows in planning lines leads to error-Version 28.0

Hi All,

So is a fix available for the copying and pasting using Edit in excel option from the BC browser screen?

I would like to say though The pasting is possible now with just a blue warning saying some data might be truncated.

is this like a patch that Microsoft has placed recently?

Our current version is US Business Central 28.0 (Platform 28.0.50706.0 + Application 28.0.46665.51097)

Though we are able to copy and paste we get an alert .So just checking .

Hello Indira,

I don’t think Microsoft has documented this as a specific recent patch, at least not from what I have seen in the public docs. Copy/paste in the BC web client is supported on editable lists, but the page/table design can still block or limit pasting, and the blue warning about possible truncation usually means BC accepted the paste but is warning that one or more field values may exceed the allowed field length. So I would treat it as improved/changed behavior in the current client, but not assume it is fully fixed for all pages. Best practice is to test the same paste in a sandbox, check if any values were actually shortened, and if the issue is inconsistent or page-specific, raise it with Microsoft through a support ticket.

So for now we are progressing with the acceptance that there is a partial fix with the blue notification leading to atleast letting us paste the data. However I would wait for the complete fix for this that is to how its behavior was before with no error or anything.

Yes, this is likely the result of a recent Business Central platform improvement rather than a specific fix applied to your environment.

Microsoft has enhanced the Edit in Excel experience so that users can often paste data directly while receiving a blue warning that some values may be truncated if they exceed Business Central field limits, instead of having the paste operation blocked or fail silently.

If the data is successfully publishing back to Business Central, the warning is generally informational and indicates that the system is checking for potential field-length issues while still allowing the import to proceed.

Hi,

what you describe sounds less like a fix and more like the normal paste behaviour, the blue truncation warning is the platform telling you some pasted value is longer than the field allows and it will cut it to fit, not an error blocking you. So the paste going through now with just that info bar is expected, it is not stopping you, it is warning you a field might lose characters.
From what I seen the hard block people used to hit was different, things like you cannot paste X rows in 1 row, or invalid value stops the paste, those are about column order or the page not being empty, not truncation. The truncation one has been there, it just lets you proceed. I have not seen a specific recent Microsoft patch announced just for this, more likely you are on a newer version where the message is friendlier than a hard stop.

So I would not treat it as fixed, treat it as working as designed, but do check the fields that warned, if a description or code got cut you want to know before posting. Are you copying straight into a list with Ctrl V, or through Edit in Excel and publish? And which value is it warning on, because if it is a key field like a No. getting truncated that is worth catching, a long description less so. What BC version are you on?
