Change Item Lookup Description field to show more characters.

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Good Day everyone,

I want to know how can I change the amount of characters for the Description column?

I am currently using Dynamics GP 2016, ver. 16.00.0404 (RTM)

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi,

Have you changed your security in the Alternative/Modified Forms and Reports ID? You need to look in the SmartList product and pick the window 'Items', then select the radio button for the modified window. The other change that's needed in modifier is that you have to move the Description field off of the second line of the scrolling window and swap it with the field that's in that position now. I don't have Dynamics installed on this machine, so I can't tell you the exact name of the field, but it's a String 30 field.  No matter how wide you would make it, it will only display 30 characters. To display more, you have to change the position of the Description field. Once you do that, the description field will stay in that position regardless of the 'Sort By' choice. That's because the Sort By choice is now on the second line.

    Does that make any sense?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

Something I'm not doing correctly... I increase the field a lot wider, and still don't show all characters.

BTW, if I open modifier for that window, this is what I see... is that normal?

I have increased the Item Description field in the Item Scroll window.

Verified for the field properties too.

Saved everything and when going to check the windows, and still showing the same thing. not my modified window.

not sure what I've done wrong.

    Hi,

You can use modifier to increase the visual length of the field. The problem is that the field that is used for that position is a String 30 field. You cannot change that, but you can move the item description field into that position and modify the window sow that it is wider and will therefore show more characters. I did a quick modification of my window (bear in mind I didn't do anything to line up the titles) and it looks like this:

As you can see, I made a couple of the item descriptions much longer and they appear in the field. More of a proof of concept for you.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Hi Bill,

    Thanks for the quick response.

In the Item Maintenance I have the description that I need. but in this current windows that is the Inventory Lookup, if I search for the product, it doesn't show up the name as we have it in the Item Maintenance. Seems that the form is cutting the field that doesn't let all the Description to show up.

The Item Card, have 100 characters. So I don't have any problem with that.

    Thanks,

    Hi Daniel,

Is the problem that the description in this window does not show everything entered in the Master Card for the Inventory Item?

Or is the problem that the description field on the Item Card is not long enough?

The second issue would likely require a change at the database level - to provide more characters for the field - someone that knows the Dexterity would likely be better to answer this one.

If it is an issue with the form cutting off the field then you might be able to modifiy the form - again - might need some assistance from a person that knows the underlying design to assist.

Let us know what is the key issue and see how the community can help.
