Passing connection role type from Lead to new Connection using a workflow

In our B2B company, nearly every Lead is the result of an existing relationship between someone working for the company and the lead contact. We capture these relationships between Contacts and Users using connections.

I have a workflow in places that creates a Connection between User and Contact when the Lead is qualified. Right now the connection role for all new connections is set to a default value.

What I'd like to achieve is to have a field in the Lead record that is a lookup on available connection roles (or an equivalent solution) so that the workflow can create a user defined connection role (eg Friend, Former Client etc) rather than only being able to set a single default value.

Any thoughts on how this might be achieved?

Thank you, Dan.
