Country and State Codes

On our current ERP, I cannot put any checks on the customer addresses, so we have issues with simple things like spelling Texas.  You have TX, Tex, Texas and I've even seen Taxes.  Then there is the problem with the US Post Office, which does not recognize the 2 character ISO codes for countries and they require the entire name of the country to be spelled out on the bottom of the address.  This leads to Trinidad and Tobago being spelling Trinidad, Tobago, or any misspelling you can think of.   Is it possible to set up look up fields with the out of the box GP for the State and Country fields in the address tables so that there is only one way to enter TX and only one way enter Italy?  Or is it going to require some customization using one of the integration packages?

Jan 1, 2011 is when we move to GP 2010.

This may help, although we do not use it.  In the customer maintenance window is a field "Country Codes".  The description assigned to the Country Code will populate the field "Country" which will prevent typing errors or different acronyms being used for the same country. From the instructions, it seems the field was designed/created to be used for European Intrastat reporting, but I would assume it could be used for all countries since you are the one creating/maintaining the matrix.  I found the following instructions for using the "Country Codes" field.

    To set up country codes:

    1. Open the Country Code Maintenance window.
(Tools >> Setup >> Company >> Country Codes)

The Country Code Maintenance window will be available only if you have marked to enable Intrastat tracking in the Company Setup Options window.

    1. Enter a country code and indicate whether this country is an EU member.
    2. Enter a description for this country code.
    3. Save your changes and continue entering country codes

If you're not using the Intratstat module, leave the EU Member box unticked.
