Real Old data conversion

We have been asked by a company that has not upgraded Great Plains since Microsoft Business Solutions v7 - that's right - they are still using Btrieve / Pervasive and they are FINALLY scared enough of the technology failure that they are wondering what their options might be.

While I can take care of the 'new software' and getting the running on the new version pretty quick - the question being posed here is

"Does anyone have ability to migrate 4 or 5 fairly small data sets from GP 7.0 to GP2013"

Before anyone jumps on the 'not supported' bandwagon, I am aware of this.

What we are looking for is 'can it be done' - what is the cost of doing the migration - then at that point the client will decide to archieve the data and start from Jan 1, 2014 on GP 2013 with no historical data OR spend the money to migrate all the old data.

This client has data going back to at least 1997.

So, for all you old timers, putting on your thinking caps - or just dig out your old files and tools and let me know what it might look like - time and cost.

    Hi Mark,

At the end of the day, that is dollar question that the client has to answer.  What is the data back that far worth to them ?

I will give them the details and then let them decide the value of the 'old' data.

I agree with Richard. It's a lot hops, but it can be done, usually 2 versions at a time at most. So from 7.5 on M.SQL even 8 to 10 to 2013 is possible with a bunch of service packs along the way. In terms of cost, I would think it's mostly just time.

The other side is what do they do with that data? Does anyone compare 2013 to 1997 and does it mean anything to anyone?

    Mark

Richard I will be very interested to see what you might come back with on a cost to make this migration.

We have not discussed what the end Server version may be yet.

This is a company that has scalled back to the point that there is only a single employee - therefore they may be able to run on a single workstation / SQL Server implementation.

Anyway, if you want to take this off the forum sight, you can communicate with me via personal email - included in friend request.

Bill, this can definitely be done. We would have to start by getting them to GP 7.5 P.SQL and then migrate to GP 7.5 M.SQL and then make hops the rest of the way. Heck, I could even migrate them from GPA for DOS if they needed that. They might as well keep all their data, assuming it is healthy. I can get the dust off the old DVD's and put some thought into the cost for this. Most likely this can be done in a couple of days. I image everything here so probably a W2003 server and a W2008 or W2012 server at the end should do it.
