SQL Installation Guide

Hi people,

We are now at the stage of installing the AX 2012R2 software and SQL is obviously part of this. Does anyone have a step-by-step guide (for AX) as how to do this. This is the test environment but I would like to follow best practices down to every detail.

Thanks everyone!

There is some information on how to setup SQL Server in the AX installation guide: www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx.

I don't really have a guide but I've done the SQL upgrade already as part of our upgrade project.   Basically, the SQL upgrade can be easy or hard depending on how you do it.  What I did:

*Look for SQL 2012 upgrade assistant and run it.  It will tell you some of the changes you need to make.  Warning - it may not give you a complete list.

    1.  Back up the databases and move backup to a safe location

    2.  Shut down SQL service

    3.  Control panel/programs --- uninstall all of SQL

    4.  Reboot

    5.  Install SQL 2012 as a new installation.  Prep here is crucial.  Make sure you have all accounts with correct roles before you start.  Normal SQL installation roles apply.

    6.  Import your backup from step 1.

    7.  Check to see that all tables came across.  Check to see all users exist with correct roles and permissions.  Hopefully you already have who has what permissions documented.

    8.  Reboot

    9.  Connect AX.

Be very careful what else you upgrade.  I went and grabbed MS updates too and found out the hard way that AX 2012 does not work within .NET 4.5 depending on what addition you are on.

*Note, your results may vary.  See also AX installation guide to find more info on setup.  If your upgrade lasts more than four hours, see you doctor.  No warranty implied.

    Hello Again,

Thanks for all the great responses!

I was just wondering about which specific options I should use during the install for AX (like which components)?

Also, is everyone using the new managed accounts features in Windows 7 / 2008 / 20012?

    Thanks

Sorry my apologies, I mean which components should be installed for the SQL part of the installation.

There are so many there and I am a little confused which options to add.

Should I be using service managed accounts?

    Thanks again!
