Create a custom report with data sources from CRM and SQL

As a developer, I have a request from client who asked me if it is possible to create a

custom report and then deploy it to CRM. The data sources will come from both CRM and Sql in our company. I know it's easy to create a report when the data source is only from CRM, but when a data source other than CRM is needed, I have no clue how this could be possible. Could you let me know if you have any ideas? Thanks a lot.

    Hi DanielYuan,

Is this what you are looking for?

    Thank you.

Thanks a lot, Meenoo, for taking a look at my question and trying to help me. Maybe I did not illustrate my question well. The report I am going to create will come from two data sources. First it's the underlying sql database for CRM, which is easy for me to create queries. The other one is from another sql database, which is located in a different server from the server for CRM, and this database is for the control panel of our company.

In short, the report I am going to will consolidate the data from two databases. After the report is created, it should be deployed on the CRM system for use.

Is there any way that my request can be realized? Thanks a lot.

    Hi DanielYuan,

Is the CRM instance online or on-premise? If Online, then unfortunately, it is not possible to create a CRM report that uses an SQL-based datasource, only FetchXML. If On-Premise, then there is technically a way of doing it, according to this article:

    www.ktlsolutions.com/.../Custom-CRM-Reports-with-External-Data.aspx

The post looks to be aimed towards CRM 2013, so unsure if it still works or not.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Joe

Hi... i think you can do it... the datasource for dynamics CRM you can create it as well easy, the other datasource you should use something like a shared datasource with the connection string to the another sql... do you try that? i know that is possible. i'm going to check something and later i told you how... i remember sometime somebody show me that.

    Hi DanielYuan,

Yes, you can create two data source one for sql database for CRM and other for another sql database with respective connection string. Then add datasets for the datasouces.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks,

    Sam

Thanks for all your replies above. I know that the .rdl file can be created easily in the SSRS builder with the two data sources involved. However, when I was trying to deploy it into the CRM, CRM did not allow me to do and gave me the error message that no way to deploy the .rdl file to CRM. Does anyone know how I can fix this issue?

    Thanks a lot.

    Hi,

Is the CRM you are trying to deploy to online or on premise.

    Thanks

I am trying to deploy the report on premise.

I tried the method provided by  Joe Griffin. It is working well to deploy my report with an external data source of CRM.

Thanks for all of you who helped me.
