Existing records changed after switching column from User Local to Date Only

Hi everyone,

I have a column named "Actual Date" in my Dataverse table. Initially, the column type was Date Behavior with User Local.

In this setup, the date values were displaying differently for users depending on their time zone, since Dataverse converts and stores Date values in UTC.

To make the date consistent for all users, I changed the column’s behavior from User Local to Date Only. After this change, the date values are now showing the same for all users, irrespective of their time zone — which is expected.

However, I noticed that this change also affected older records. The previously stored date values have also been converted to the time zone–independent format, which means their displayed dates have shifted compared to what users originally saw before the change.

Could someone please explain why existing records were reinterpreted automatically when the column behavior changed, and whether there’s a way to preserve the old displayed dates when switching from “User Local” to “Date Only”?

When you change a column’s Date Behavior from User Local to Date Only, Dataverse reinterprets all stored values. User Local stores dates in UTC and adjusts for each user’s time zone. Date Only ignores time zones and treats the value as a pure date. So, existing records shift because the time zone offset is removed.

To preserve old display values you can try :

    • Export data before the change and re-import adjusted dates, or
    • Keep the original column and create a new Date Only column for consistency.
Unfortunately, Dataverse does not automatically preserve the previous display values when changing behavior , The system assumes the new behavior applies to all records
