Unmanaged changes on Production are not getting overwritten by managed solution

Posted on by 605

Hi

At one of our customers, we are using managed solutions for QA and PRD. On DEV we maintain the unmanaged solution.

After the latest deployments, we are having more and more problems to have the forms in QA and PRD appear like they have been customized in DEV. Also name changes are not performed.

We use the setting Overwrite Customizations when importing the managed solution, we do not use patches (anymore) since they also gave problems to overwrite customizations.

I understand that unmanaged changes are layed on top of managed customizations. But if forms are not overwritten, then what's the use of Overwrite Customizations?

Thanks in advance

Kim

    Hi Kim ,

Here is the url where it's mentioned

    [View:https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg334576.aspx]

Yes you can make a copy of the older one and create new forms that won't have any problem.

If any updated button in unmanaged solution not reflect in existing managed solution whether you selected overwrite option in that I would suggest just simply open the ribbon button from your managed solution and hide them from managed solution.

Create new new button in unmanaged solution and apply the similar changes . Uncustomize the button which changes is not reflecting.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi

    thanks for the update.

Where does it state that the overwrite option does not update forms? This article states:

    (technet.microsoft.com/.../dn531198.aspx;MSPPError=-2147217396#BKMK_ImportUpgradExportSolutions)

    "Overwrite Customizations"

"Selecting this option overwrites any unmanaged customizations previously performed on components included in this solution. All updates included in this solution will take effect."

For forms, we are thinking about making a copy of them and removing the old ones during next deployment.

We do not only have forms which are not being updated, but also see that some ribbon changes are not reflecting as customized. I don't see how we can remove unmanaged ribbon changes?

    Kind regards

    Kim

    Hi Kim,

I understand your issue ike you can see the most of the form section, field are same and you can see some additional component may be.

But this is the way Dynamics CRM work. Microsoft Clearly mentioned changes entity foms on managed soolutionand sitemap wont be overwrite even when overwrite option selected.

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../gg309329.aspx

Once you chagne anything on top of managed solution that means its actually creating unmanaged layer.

It will be good if you have any DB backup before changes , you can restore or  you need to do manually  in your QA and PRD environment althoug this is not recommended , but dont have any other option.

Next time when you redeploy you need to revalidate the form if anything change you did.

    Hope this helps
