Receiving Error message: Attempted to read or write protected memory.

Hey, guys! I hope somebody can help me to fix this error.

We are using MS Dynamics SL SP1 and it works perfectly fine except for one user.  The user is receiving System Message: "Attempted to read or write protected memory.  This is often an indication that the other memory is corrupt."

This happens whenever Dynamics SL is started.

I looked into  the Application event viewer and  an  error on .Net Runtime Optimization Service (etc..) Failed to Compile:  {{SEVERAL  Dynamics SL Application files}}.  Files are located on the local computer and on the server.

What I've done so far:

1. Reinstalled all .Net Frameworks .

2. Reinstalled Dynamics SL on the client.

3. Removed and added back the user account on Dynamics SL Server.

4. Checked if the permissions on SQL Server database is the same for other users.

5. Gave the user local administrator rights. (temporarily)

6. Temporarily assigned Admin rights on Dynamics and on SQL server  2005 (not recommended)

7. Installed hotfixes found on Dynamics customer Resource:  14780SY, 14251SY,  17604SY, 16035SY

8. Mapped drive is pointing correctly.

9. We all use Windows Authentication.

10. Made sure Solomon.ini exists on Application Data folder

All of the above did not work.  This is the same for all the other computer that the user tries to log on to. Other users can use the computers and run Dynamics just fine.  By the way, users has Roaming Profiles.

Im getting frustrated because our Product partner cannot think of any other solution either.  Your help will be appreciated!

My tech says there's yet ANOTHER hot fix, (starts with 18) that fixes this.

    Same problem here.

I created an XP image and was not able to get SL to connect to the DB.

I removed it from the image and am doing a post-install.

Now when I launch the program i get the memory error.

Why is the app so unstable? There are 20 other apps on this XP image and they all work perfectly, including Office.

Can anyone shed more light on this error? I am not running roaming profiles.

Re: Receiving Error message: Attempted to read or write protected memory.

    Dear Arles,

The solomon.ini is located at the User's Profile\Application Data.

We determined that there was something wrong with the User's Roaming profile.

How: We tested running Dynamics using the user's local profile and it worked just fine.

To fix:I recreated the user's Server profile, and alas! MS Dynamics SL finally worked!

Still I want to discover what exactly went wrong, so I get back on this when I find out.  Thank you again for trying to help.  I hope the fix would help others too.

Re: Receiving Error message: Attempted to read or write protected memory.

If you're on version 7.0, the other thing you can check is whether or not the Solomon.ini file is located in C:\Windows.  In version 7.0, that was moved to the user's profile directory.  If the file is located in C:\Windows then rename to Solomon.old or something like that and try to reconnect.  Let me know if that helps!  Thanks!

Re: Receiving Error message: Attempted to read or write protected memory.

    Hello, Arles!

The user is in the same domain and AD Security group as the other users.  I gave the user the same access rights on Dynamics modules... still doesn't work.  Any other clues you can share?

What's interesting is that I created a new user from another group just to test and received the same system error.  We are still on our testing mode on Dynamics and I am hoping to get more clues on what is happening before it become live.

    Thanks for your kind attention!

Oh... well that's a different story.  I think I missed the part where the same user can't sign on to other PCs that work.

Is this user in a different AD group than everyone else or is the AD account on a different domain?  By the way, feel free to email me if need be for further explanation at wells_arles@hotmail.com.

    Thanks!

I would start by doing a full uninstall while having local Admin rights and then completely remove all references from the registry.  Restart the computer then reinstall Dynamics SL then SP1 while having local Admin rights.

One question, are you installing just the client piece or a full install on this box?  One other thing to try if you're just installing the client is to try a full install to see if that remedies the problem.  Just be careful because you'll have to remember that this particular user will be pulling everything locally, especially user reports.

     Hope that helps!

Hi, Arles! Thank you for your reply!

I am just installing the client piece of the software.  Any other users can logon to the computer and run MS Dynamics just fine using Windows Authentication.  Im guessing Dynamics cannot authenticate her Windows user account...? I've tried logging as the user to the workstations that work with other users but she's getting the same error every time.

I will try your solution and will let you know if that helps. Thanks a lot!
