Synchronizing Fields Cross-Entities

Hello,

I was wondering how I can synchronize 2 fields cross entity. (with one field retrieveing and displaying the information from the other field). I know it has to do with N:1 and 1:N relations but the specifics elude me. May I ask for a guide how to link these fields?

Thank you very much in advance,

Kindest Regards,

There are a few different ways to do this, depending on your goal.

    1. Instead of actually syncing the fields, create a Quick View of the record you want to see data from, and then add that View to the form of the record type you want to see it To.  For example, you want to see the Main Phone of the Parent Account on the Contact.  Make a Quick View of the Main Phone for an Account and add that to the Contact form.  You will always see the Account's Main Phone on all Contacts.

    2. You can add a relationship between two fields.  When you're customizing an entity, go to the 1:N relationships and open the relationship you want to map fields for.  On the left is the mappings area.  Open that and map the two fields you want to match.  Of note, this is very limited, as it doesn't truly sync the fields.  It only maps them the first time, and only from certain screens.  For example, if you create a new Contact from an Account form, the address of the Account will be added to the Contact automatically.  However, you are free to change that address afterward and there is no sync.  This is good when you have default values on records that need to be easily changed.

    3. Workflows. you can build workflows that will update related records when fields change.  So if you want to update a parent Account when you change a Contact, workflows can do that.  However, they don't go from the parent down to the child out of the box.  You'll need a custom workflow step if you want to update all your child records whenever a parent record is updated.

Lots of options, depending on what you want to do.  And this isn't even technically all of them.  You could use a plugin instead of workflows, for example.

    Quick View Form

if the field only for displaying purpose in child records, you can use Quick view form

    Workflow / Plugin

if you are planning to process the field in child records ( business rule, javascript, workflow or plugin)  i would suggest you to write plugin or custom workflow to achieve it.

    Entity mapping

    - only work if you are creating record from parent record, and it does not update the child record if parent record field is updated.
