New Server Installation - conversion from old

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I was wondering if anyone can help me.  We have a new server with server 2012, SQL 2014.  I have installed Dynamics SL 2015 on it.  So far so good.  I backed up the databases on the old server and imported/restored them on the new server/new sql.   But when I go to SL database maintenance to begin the conversion the database is not in the box.   I know I am missing a step but I don't see anything in the installation manual regarding this particular scenario.

I appreciate any advice.

Thank you

You will need to set Trustworthy to "TRUE" for the System DB and each App DB.

My bad. I was running the Alter statement with the " " around the DBName. I can now set Trustworthy to True but DB Maint will still not show the sys and app?

I still cannot set the "Trustworthy" property to True. I have been given a SQL2000 backup of the APP and SYS databases. I restored them into a SQL 2008R2 instance. Backed them up and then restored them into the SQL 2014 instance. I've tried the Alter in both the SQL2008 and the SQL2014 and both give the same error.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Jeremy,  my setting for Trustworthy is set to False and is grayed out. When I try to Alter DB I get this message:

    Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
    Incorrect syntax near 'SLSYSTEM'.
    Msg 195, Level 15, State 5, Line 3
'Trustworthy' is not a recognized SET option.

Have you updated servername  to your new server in table domain in your sys database

I tried to do the update of views and synchronize security but it keeps failing.  NEWSERVERNAME\Administrator has insufficient Rights to update Report Rights

    Error Code 0 (zero)

So the Servername is not the same as the old servername.  Not sure what I am missing.

After you changed the Domain.ServerName, did you run DB Maintenance to update Views and Synchronize Security? I would recommend doing that.

And you should have no problem connecting to SL from the server, after taking the steps noted above.

I was able to convert the database.  But now When I try to log in to do the registration I do NOT see the SQL server or database.  Weird.   I checked the Trustworthy settings - it is set to Yes for the system database and the application database.   In an older version I recall I was not able to log into Dynamics from the server.  Is that still the case?  Should I set up a workstation?

If you are unable to see the database from the Find Database screen you need to make sure it is set to Trustworthy in SQL.

    • Check properties of System DB and look under Options

    • Make sure “Trustworthy” is set to “TRUE”

    • If not, then run following script against System DB:

      Alter Database “DBNAME”

      Set Trustworthy ON

Also, there will be some work that needs to be done with users as well.  I haven't gotten there yet but I am sure that the users on the new system are not in the old data tables.
