D365 Intercompany setup - item numbers

Hello dear community

we migrated from AX 2009 TO d365 and we heavily use intercompany ordering.

In AX 2009, it is was very flexible mapping different item numbers using external item descriptions so different legal entities

In D365 , we need to use the product or product master and then release it to the legal entities.

My question is:

is this the only way we can map item numbers via intercompany? 

I noticed that there is a field called External code ? Could maybe this used ? I cannot find any documentaiton on this.

    Hi Alessandro,

    External item descriptions is still an option. Would it not an option to keep the item number similar in each legal entity?

    I don't think you can bypass that. 

    Looking at Inter-company always searchs for the same Item id in both companies

    Thanks Nuno for confirming.

    You would imagine different companies going live in different times,trading intercompany and with their own product naming convention.

    On this D365 is really not flexible at all.

    Hi.

    Value-mapping is required for data that is not shared. Products are shared; therefore, value-mapping is not required. However, other information, like modes of delivery, are not shared, hence value mapping is required.
