Adding users to Teams issue - "you cannot join one or more of the teams selected"

I am trying to add some users to several different owner teams and am getting this message in each of the teams after selecting the users and hitting "add". Can someone help me figure this out? Should be a no-brainer to add users into a team.

You cannot join one or more of the teams selected. The membership of default teams cannot be modified.

    Just realized the user needs to be assigned a business unit and then additional teams can be created and users can be added there.
